Victorian Mile Championships
Some very close finishes highlighted the running of the Victorian Mile
Championships on Tuesday 30th January.
Doncaster's rising junior talent Samantha Carberry made race favourite
Anna Worland work very hard for the title. In a brave move,
Carberry took the lead on the final lap before the experienced Worland
proved too strong down the home straight to claim yet another State
Tile. Sarah Lofts placed 3rd with Martine Daniliuc 4th.
The much anticipated showdown between Paul Hoffman and Jeff Riseley
delivered everything thing we expected... except the sub 4min mile.
After a slowish 62sec first lap, plenty of work was required over the
last 800m with both runners responding accordingly. Hoffman just
held out the fast finishing Riseley, who claimed his first senior
Victorian title.
David McNeil placed third with the consistent Jason Woolhouse 4th.
With 8 men running under 4:10, this proved to be a worthy Championship
race. The tradition of Victorian Mile racing has been reborn.
In the Men's A 800m Matt Gibney ran a PB of 1:50.68 to take first place
ahead of VMC regulars Josh Schmidt and Navin Arunasalam.
Melissa Duncan took out the Women's A 800m in 2:11.54 ahead of Kaila
McKnight & Linden Hall. Glenhuntly's Kelly Hetherington ran a very
strong 2:11.77 to take out the Women's B race.
